MSR Storm King Tent: Large Capacity

The MSR Storm King is one of the biggest expedition tents with a capacity of sleeping up to 5 people and suitable for use in extreme winter conditions. You don’t often get such big 4 season tents and with the glowing reviews I’ve seen it really stands up to the job. Customers have also purchased it for summer camping as the tent fabric is a good insulator.

You can see the full specifications below but basically the MSR StormKing will sleep 5 people quite comfortably. It has 2 vestibules - a really large one at the front and a smaller one at the rear. There are two access doors which is what you need with a big tent so that people don’t have to climb over each other to get in and out. The double entrance also provides plenty of ventilation through the tent. The outer door has 3 zippers on it so you are able to open it in various ways according to how much ventilation you need.

The tent itself is free standing which helps when setting up. Also the aluminium poles of which there are 5, are all the same length so there is no need to worry if you are using the correct pole! Putting away is also made easier by having compression straps – you just roll up the tent and use the straps to make it smaller to fit into the bag.

Why is it suitable for winter camping?

The tough frames have been reinforced and are therefore very strong and stable even in high winds. In addition they can handle heavy snow falls without buckling.
The tent material is made to keep the cold and wet out – ripstop nylon, polyurethane and silicone coated! It also has a sealed bathub floor which helps to keep the weather out.

Positives

Customers really love the size of the Storm King. It really is a 5 man tent. One review even mentioned that they were able to accommodate 8 people inside the tent during the day quite easily. With 2 vestibules to store stuff, the sleeping area is left free from gear or equipment you might be using. There are also interior pockets and a gear loft for storing smaller items.
Although this tent is big it is extremely stable. It can withstand really high winds but mo st of all it is able to deal with heavy snow falls with no problems at all. One reviewer called it “bomb proof”!
There have been no reports of leaks.
The large airy space inside means that even with 5 people sleeping there are no condensation problems.
The internal height of 64 inches means that it is very comfortable inside when moving around.
Due to the quality, durable material, this tent maintains its heat inside and provides good insulation from the cold. Conversely it is great at keeping hot weather out during the summer!

Negatives

I have only come across 2 negatives – the price and the weight!

At around $1000 it is an expensive tent but you get exceptional quality, suitable (and safe) for extreme weather and it does last years and years. I have read a few reviews from people who are still using it after 7 or 8 years.

If you want to go backpacking on your expedition then this tent is probably not going to work. However, at around 14 pounds in weight it is in fact a light tent considering its huge size.

I have come across another review site mentioning that the inside can get stuffy but I haven’t actually found any customer reviews to justify that. In fact I have seen the opposite – plenty of comments on how good the ventilation is! So I’m not sure where they got that information from.

Conclusion

As with all MSR tents, the manufacturer provides a lifetime warranty provided the tent has been properly cared for. If any defects are found then they will replace your tent. If any pole breaks they will repair and replace it. (If you go to their website you can find a tent setup guide – just 4 steps!).

The MSR Storm King tent is a fantastic, solid piece of equipment that will not let you down. I would highly recommend this tent if you are planing winter camping and have a large number in your group or family.
