Is MSR Mutha Hubba the best backpacking tent?

Often finding a large backpacking tent with room for three people can be quite difficult. When you find a 3 person tent you like the look of when you actually see it you find it isn’t very big inside and in fact would be more suitable for 2 people. Alternatively you manage to find one large enough for 3 persons but the weight is more than you wanted to have to carry.

Well the MSR Mutha Hubba 3-person tent is probably what you might be looking for. The Hubba camping brands in general are known for their ultra-lightweight design and this tent is no different despite being large and spacious inside. It has a special pole configuration which helps give a roomy feel to the interior as well as good head height too.

The tent can be used as a free standing tarp shelter (you would need to get a footprint) which saves even more weight if you know the weather conditions are going to be OK. Otherwise you can set it up complete and get really good protection against cold and rain – this double wall design is so good that it has been classed as a 3 plus season tent so should be fine to use in moderate winter conditions. Its sleek profile helps resist any high winds.

Customer reviews have been fairly consistent in recommending the MSR Mutha Hubba and being pleased with their purchase. Here are a few things that have stood out during my research.

Things to Note

Most people suggest purchasing a footprint for the tent to give you the versatility on how you use the tent. The footprint is slightly smaller than the tent but shouldn’t stretched as it will tear.

Apparently the weight of the mutha hubba is more like that of a 2 person tent but some backpackers have commented that they didn’t think it was ULTRA light but was acceptable for carrying considering the space you get.

There are only 6 guy outs on the tent. This may seem too little but no campers have actually mentioned that they needed extra only that they thought they might!

Setting Up Tip

You will find 2 silver poles that should go over (not under as you might expect) a gold pole!
