Family Tents

When I think of a family tents I think big! Depending on how many children you have or if you have a dog will determine what size and design of tent you need.

I have reviewed tents large enough for 6 or more people in this category. Anything smaller will be compared in my 3 or 4 season tent categories.

Poles are the most likely thing that will break. It has happened to me and most other campers I know when camping in windy weather. It is therefore important never to stress them and take care of the elastic part that links the poles together. When getting the pole out from its sleeve don’t pull but push them out!

Most family tents will have a lobby at the front entrance. This is ideal for cooking in as you should never cook inside the tent itself. The lobby will be properly ventilated too.

Your tent material will probably be made of nylon or type of waterproof polyester. This makes them lightweight and airy but they are more prone to condensation than canvas tents as they heat up and cool down quicker. Therefore it is best to allow air to circulate overnight by leaving vents open. The darker the color of the material the more it screens out sunlight but they absorb the heat more. If you have young children you might want a more brightly colored tent so that they can find it easier!

Many tents now have a ground sheet built in so that there is no gap around the bottom edge. This is better for keeping out bugs and cutting out draughts. They tent to be slightly more expensive and you need to be careful not to put weight against these edges and stress the seams.

There are plenty of big family tents available and most campsites now allow extra space for pitching them! I personally prefer the tents with separate rooms so that the children can sleep in one area and you in another. In some tents these areas can be removed to create a large space if required. However, I know plenty of families who love to be in together as it adds to the fun!

Options generally include the larger tunnel and sundome tents although frame tents are still available they tend to be very heavy and large when packed up so are not as popular anymore. Coleman and Eureka manufacture some great family camping tents and are very popular.

If you have any comments then please feel free to add your opinion or advice too if you have any of these tents listed.
